Internal medicine is one of the most versatile specialty of medicine. It is holistic, dealing with investigating, recognising and curing diseases affecting the whole body. The modern internist has comprehensive knowledge not only about respiratory, circulatory, gastrointestinal and renal diseases but the fields of hematological, nervous system, locomotor organ's and infectious diseases as well. At Medoc Health Center, our cardiology, endocrinology, diabetology and gastroenterology specialists are locally at your disposal for further investigation and treatment of diseases revealed by the general internist's examination.

 

When is it recommended to contact an internist?

In all cases when you cannot decide which specialist should you contact with your complaints. These can be symptoms of any kind of internal or hereditary diseases, any kind of suspected tumorous disease, metabolic disorders (diabetes, disorders of fat or protein metabolism), hematological disorders (anemia, decreased number of white blood cells or platelets), unclarified symptoms of the locomotor organs, in the case of a comprehensive investigation prior to a surgical intervention, suspected infection, persistent fever, increased stress and if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
  • loss of appetite, excessive weight loss
  • nausea, vomiting
  • excessive weight gain
  • difficulty swallowing
  • heartburn, reflux symptoms
  • diarrhea, bloody stools or constipation
  • abdominal pain, abdominal distension
  • headache, dizziness
  • permanent coughing, hoarseness
  • fatigue

 

For whom is it recommended to contact an internist even in asymptomatic state, for preventive reasons?

  • for patients above the age of 50 to have a comprehensive internal medical screening
  • for asymptomatic patients belonging to any risk groups (if you are overweighted/obese, existing carbohydrate metabolism disorders)
  • for first degree relatives of tumorous patients
  • for patients with existing fat metabolism disorders

 

What happens during the internist's visit?

At the internist's visit, the specialist first records your detailed history about your prior diseases, current complaints, asks about the quantity and duration of smoking and alcohol consumption, records your current medicines as well, your working conditions and any possible stress factors. He or she records the health status of family members and relatives as well. Then a physical examination is performed by palpation, percussion, auscultation, and measurement and registration of your blood pressure and dimensions of your body - height, weight, BMI, abdominal circumference - take place and finally, the specialist examines your bones, muscles, joints, reflexes and your pupils. In case of need (e.g. in diabetes or circulatory diseases) a risk evaluation by a questionnaire may also be performed
