Rheumatology

Rheumatology is dealing with the conservative (non-surgical) treatment of musculoskeletal diseases, such as bone, muscle, tendon and joint diseases. The symptoms affects approximately 70% of the population, independent of age. The symptoms of the rheumatic diseases can vary from little discomfort to severe disability, and can last for several days to years. These diseases can be inflammatory joint diseases of autoimmune or metabolic origin, degenerative joint diseases (arthritis), diseases of the bones, discs, ligaments, tendons, muscles and painful spinal diseases. Osteoporosis also belongs to the field of rheumatology. The task of the rheumatology specialist is to make the most appropriate and most effective individual therapeutic recommendation for the patient and for which a permanent recovery can be reached.

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING A RHEMUATOLOGY EXAMINATION?

First of all, your medical history, past diseases and current complaints will be recorded by the specialist. He or she assesses the patient’s lifestyle at home and office and their effects related to musculoskeletal organs. Afterwards, a detailed physical examination takes place during which the specialist evaluates the status and movability of the spine, the joints and the muscles, and also specifically examines the aching regions. The examination takes place both in standing and lying positions. It is essential to explore the causes of the symptoms or what triggered the trauma. After the rheumatology specialist identifies the nature of the disease, he or she recommends further examinations or a required therapy. After diagnosis, therapeutic measures, should be started immediately under the control of the specialist.
